One Hell of a Workflow

January 17th, 2010

For me, being a musician, every song starts with a tune. It can start by just mumbling a tune while doing the dishes. When the dishes are done, the tune is still stuck in my head and I want to work on it and share it with my band and friends.

So how does this work:
  • I grab my saxophone and start to play the tune. This sounds cool! Let’s record it.
  • I get my laptop, start the sound editor and record the tune.
  • After that is done I convert it to an MP3.
  • I attach the MP3 to an email and send it to some friends.
  • One of my friends is a drummer and he likes the tune. So he imports the MP3 into his sound editor and starts ticking along with it.
  • He converts his session to another MP3 and sends it back again.

Wow, that’s one-hell-of-a workflow!

I’ve experienced this problem a lot and I’ve already tried to solve it with my former colleagues at Suite75 in the form of Tjoon.com. Tjoon is split-screen video jamming using a webcam. It was a pet project for us and we wanted to let people share their creativity online. Tjoon was great. It was such an inspiring piece of software. And people made great things. This man singing Canceled Check from Beck is simply fantastic. I think 200 out of 300 views is me. I love the way he sings the song and even more so that he created it all online. Unfortunately, for most musicians this tool was not solving their problem. They didn’t own a webcam, needed more flexibility or didn’t want to share their precious pieces of music with the whole world yet.

I still wanted to tackle the problem and I thought that my friend Ernest, being a musician as well, might be able to help out. And yes! We came up with a new solution, called Tunedustry. We are excited about it for weeks now. And both being fanatic watchers of Mixergy.com (“Hi there, this is Andrew Warner, founder of Mixergy.com, home of the ambitious upstart!”), we felt the need to make it work and get it out there!

At this moment Tunedustry is still in private-Beta. If you want to be the first to know about Tunedustry subscribe to our RSS or Twitter.

Yours, Jaap
